Parents and caregivers know multitasking with a little one can be challenging. Check out the latest guidance for active families to safely use baby carriers at home or on-the-go.
When considering your baby carrier purchase, always buy based on how it will be primarily used for your little one, whether that’s for bonding, activity or a combination of the two. Simultaneously, keep safety in mind in terms of age and weight limits, as well as your activity level. For example, choose a sling or soft carrier for bonding or babywearing when baby is very young. Alternatively, choose a framed back carrier for hiking or other outdoor activities. Whenever possible, look for JPMA Certified products to ensure your baby gear is tested & trusted.

Position baby’s knees properly. When you are placing your infant in a carrier, be sure to position the legs in the fetal or "frog-leg" position so that their knees are higher than their bottom. Your baby's hips and knees should both be bent, and should look similar to an M shape. This was the natural position that your baby was in during pregnancy.
Before you place baby in your baby carrier, take time to check for tears, rips, etc. and then put your carrier on properly. Keep baby safe at all times by properly securing all components of your carrier, including buckles, snaps, straps, clasps, and latches. Consider whether it might be safer to sit down while you place baby in the carrier.
Make sure you are using your baby carrier responsibly. Never cook with baby in the carrier, as it puts them at risk for accidental burns. As a general rule of thumb, don't perform any routine activity while carrying baby in a carrier that you wouldn't do while holding baby in your arms. This includes activities like driving, running, or cooking.
Always look for JPMA Certified products for extra confidence in your choice. JPMA currently certifies more than 2,000 products in 29 product categories, including carriages & strollers. Each certified product is sample tested annually, as well as after any material change, at an independent laboratory to guarantee it meets the highest safety requirements. To confirm a products certification status, look for the JPMA certification seal on your product packaging, or search by product category on JPMA's Certification Directory.
