The most important first step when purchasing a new baby product (or using one that hasn't been used in a while) is to read and follow the manufacturer instructions.

Here are some top tips:

Don't Remove Warning or Safety Labels

Let’s face it - warning labels can be big and sometimes unsightly. However, having them visible is a great reminder of the best way to use your baby product.

Some baby products adapt as your baby grows, so having a reference to the maximum height and weight ranges are important for safety. As an example, safety labels on your baby’s car seat can help you know when to transition your child from rear-facing to forward-facing to a booster seat.

Some additional warning labels that are critical to safety include:

• Baby Monitors & Window Cords
• Move all cribs and beds AWAY from monitor wires and window cords to prevent strangulation

Follow Product Care Instructions

Be sure to follow product care instructions for all baby products so they stay in good working order, continue to fit comfortably, and so you get the full life of the product. For example, staple products like baby carriers made of fabric will shrink in the dryer, so you will be better off air-drying them.
